I do good... because I have to OR because it is the right thing to do?

If you read my blog last week you will be more able to follow this blog...
I had an interaction with that car coming down the mountain without their lights on.  The thing was, this was the second time I was passing this car, again, without lights on.  The connection I drew upon this second interaction was the the reason this person was not realizing that they needed to turn their lights on was that they were leading from the wrong motivation.
We were having a conversation about why leadership was so important to them.  From their perspective, they acted in a certain way because they were being watched by younger people.  The idea of integrity immediately washed over my mind.  Integrity is doing what is right when no one is watching.  This young adult seemed to only want to do good because others were watching.  It wasn't about doing good because it is simply the right thing to do.  Finding congruency in your life is vital.  Walking the talk is vital when you lead.  People are able to see right through the "bs"!  If they are not able to see through it right away, eventually people will.
So today, we flashed our lights again because people were starting to see through the incongruency "bs".
I truly believe that you have to want to lead and that you have to be leading from the heart and for the right reasons.  Lying to yourself will eventually catch up with you....  it has to become the air you breath, not just the hot air you breath out.
